I think a great reset is required, to restructure our logic circuits and legal-social expectation framework.
1. Free speech means free speech. No buts. No hateful exceptions. Direct violence or direct incitement to violence, are crimes in themselves. The cure for bad speech is good speech. Not restrictions on speech.
2. Harm needs to be defined more precisely and out of this “anything offensive is harmful” ecosystem. Out of the ether of imagined harms and into the real world of defined harms. And no, misgendering is not a punishable harm. Assholery is not a harm unless direct violence or incitement to violence. And for dealing with violence we already have criminal laws.
3. Hate is not a crime. Cannot be a crime. Will never be a crime. Hate cannot be legislated out of the human experience, just like love cannot legislated into the human experience. Hate and love is what makes us human. And if we don’t agree with that. Then we don’t agree with what it means to be a human. You can hate, and you are allowed to hate. Till the point of direct violence and direct incident to violence. And for that we already have criminal laws. Getting the drift already? Just like smothering you with love to death, will still be a crime.
4. No lobbying money allowed in politics. Separation of private money and state. Hoarding of capital makes capital more efficient. It’s a design feature of capitalism, it’s not a flaw. However, to prevent capital from overwhelming the state. There HAS to be guardrails. No more “too big to fail” bailouts without serious, punishable consequences.
5. Limited terms for highest offices of power. Legislative, executive AND judiciary. Also minimum and maximum age limits. Im quite sure 75 is a decent cutoff. You’ve lived your life, now go and enjoy your retirement. People who have very little vested interest in the future should not be controlling that future.
6. Criticism of ANY country or arbitrary group of individuals should be allowed without fear of violence, clampdowns, job firings or jail time. You should be allowed to criticise Israel AND Saudia AND Germany AND the US AND China AND East Timor. There are no holy states and all states have flaws. All of them. All states need to be criticised through REASONABLE civic peaceful public action. Operative word is reasonable.
7. Can we please stop with the classification of people into privileged and preferred groups already?! Can a person be treated by the state as a person instead of a member of a group. Groups that can be manipulated to create discord in society by preferential treatment? Men, women, white, black, brown, yellow, red, gay, straight…. Can we dispense with this failed experiment already? Judge the character not the skin?
8. Equality of opportunity, yes. Difficult as it is. Impossibly difficult. Equality of outcome (DEI), hell no. No thank you please. Hasn’t worked, won’t work, CANNNOT work. You cannot create equal outcomes for unequal inputs without creating unequal opportunity. It’s a logic fail operation.
9. Basic logic testing AND civics testing for voting. Voting rights have to balanced with some level of basic understating, what it means to vote. Also, voting at the highest level should be contingent on voting at the lowest level. If you don’t vote for your local school board or municipal elections, you don’t get to vote for the highest offices. Voting and democracy are a participation sport. You don’t get to choose to just watch the finals. You have to start at the qualifications. If the electorate refused to participate in their democracy, let there be autocracy. The punishment for being stupid and lazy. WAKE THE FUCK UP!! Also, ONLY citizens get to vote. Photo ID verified citizens.
10. The end of “phobia” shaming. I’m
Allowed to be hate certain religions or arbitrary power groups, based on my logic and preferences. I’m allowed to have both a rational or irrational fear of beheading or castration, irrespective of your feelings. Your feelings stop with you, my feelings stop with me, your rights stop with you, my rights stop with me. We have to start thinking about getting rid of this overlap of personal rights based on preferred group status. Individual human rights. Me. You.
That’s that. I should add equal bias criticism of both capitalism AND communism/socialism, in the school curriculum. As well as equal study into the excesses of Christianity AND Islam. And most importantly, equal weightage study into the death tolls of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and GW/Obama. But that’s another topic, first things first.
